Mount Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is situated within Tongariro National Park in the middle of New Zealand's North Island. This huge mountain is a semi-active volcano and has New Zealand's largest ski area with Whakapapa on the northwest slope and Turoa on the southwest slope. Both resort areas offer excellent services with the drive time between each being around 60 minutes. Being a large exposed mountain skiers and boarders need to be aware that both resorts can be affected by varying weather conditions. Within the area you can also take the extra time to explore thermal pools and geysers.

Whakapapa:

Located 6kms from Whakapapa village and 50kms from Ohakune the resort is primarils self drive only. There are 11 main lifts and 3 beginner lifts accesing over 30 groomed trails, while experts can explore the steep chutes that the mountain is famous for. The ski area has plenty of off-piste terrain a half pipe  an intermediate board park and a designated begginers area in happy valley.

Turoa:

Turoa is located 17kms from Okahune and boasts both the highest altitude and biggest vertical drop in Australasia. There are 6 main lifts and 2 beginner lifts that provide acces to over 1,235 acres of wide and varried terrain. Also providing a well maintained and designed terrain park that challenges the freestylers. Turoa is a south facing resort and is largely open to prevailing weather patterns.
