Resort Location

Falls Creek Alpine Resort is located high above the Kiewa Valley in North East Victoria and adjacent to the natural beauty of the Bogong High Plains.

Falls Creek is 4 ½ hours from Melbourne, an easy day’s drive from Sydney and the closest alpine resort to Brisbane by road. The Bogong High Plains Road winds gently uphill for around 30kms from Mt Beauty to Falls Creek before continuing on through to Omeo.

Parking & Transport

In winter access to Falls Creek is only via the township of Mount Beauty with the road to Omeo closed at Falls Creek, the road to Falls Creek from Mount Beauty gently winds uphill for 32 kms, so take your time and please drive carefully. During winter it is compulsory to carry snow chains however the road is regularly cleared of snow as required and chains are rarely fitted.

Falls Creek is above the snowline, offering true ski-in, ski-out convenience meaning no vehicle access to accommodation facilities. On arrival into Falls Creek, unload your luggage and passengers at the Oversnow Transport Terminal. Resort parking attendants will then direct you to a suitable car space for the duration of your stay and a courtesy vehicle will return you back to the Oversnow Terminal. Oversnow Transport operates regularly until late each day. Payment is made on arrival.

A little bit of history

Falls Creek is a ski-in, ski-out ski resort located in the Alpine National Park in north-eastern Victoria. It is located about 350 kilometres by road from Melbourne. The resort lies between an altitude of 1,210 and 1,830 metres, with the highest lifted point at 1780 metres.

The high plains in the area were used for cattle grazing in the summer since 1851 until 2005 when the Victorian government would not renew the grazing leases. Some of the cattlemen's huts still survive and are a tourist attraction in summer.

After World War 2 the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme was started in the Kiewa River valley by the State Electricity Commission.  The first ski lodge was built in 1948 by workers from the scheme. The first lift, a rope tow, was built in 1951 and the first chairlift in Australia was constructed there in 1957.

In summer, the temperature is on average ten degrees cooler than the valley below, making it a great place to escape the summer heat. The resort also serves as a summer base to explore the massive national park surrounding the resort.
