A little bit of history on Jindabyne

Jindabyne is in the heart of the Snowy Mountains and is at 918 metres above sea level. Jindabyne is the closest town to most of the NSW ski fields .It lies below the snowline but is close enough to the resorts to be an ideal accommodation spot for people not wanting to stay in the chalets on the snowfields.

The Jindabyne township is built on the foreshores of a stunning freshwater lake (which was completed in 1967 and has a capacity of 689 790 ML) and surrounded by the mountains. Jindabyne was originally situated on land that is now part of Lake Jindabyne, the township was transferred to its present location in the 1960s due to the damming of the Snowy River as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

The gold rush in 1859 gave the area a brief boost which resulted in the establishment of a general store and a post office and in 1882 a school was opened at Jindabyne with a Police Station being constructed the following year. The decision to release Rainbow trout into the Snowy River in 1894 was the beginning of a fishing tradition which continues today.

The Australian Polish communities have erected a huge statue of Count Paul Strzelecki who explored the wilderness of the Snowy Mountains and named Australia's highest mountain. While exploring in the Snowy Mountains region he discovered and climbed Mt Kosciuszko which he named in honour of the Polish leader and patriot Tadeusz Kosciuszko.

The town is heavily tourist-oriented with a large range of snow-sport rental outlets and accommodation facilities. There is also a wide variety of bars and restaurants, shops and services, so when you're not exploring the great outdoors you will still have plenty to do.
